The new game from Atlus, Persona 5, is a must have for JRPG enthusiast. I remember the first time I played a Shin Megami Tensei game, (Persona franchise is a spin off from SMT and share many mechanics like the fusion of “Personas” and type of gameplay) and it was one of the hardest game I had played in that time, and I really enjoyed it.
With Persona 5 Atlus has tune up the franchise to new levels. This may be not for everybody, but if you like RPG you should try it, even if you never have play a Japanese RPG. You should not be afraid that this is the fifth instalment of the series because every interaction is a self-contained game with its unique story.
The overall story revolves around a young student, who has to invade the minds of bad people and battle their inner demons in order to try to make them good.
During the day, as a student, you have to attend classes and afterwards you can hang out with your friends (there are a lot of them) and your actions during this time are very important for your game play, because trough your friends and other solo activities you can raise your status, learn new techniques, gather information, etc., and you get to explore the city of Tokyo and it´s districts like Shibuya or Akihabara. It may sound monotonous but it´s not, somehow the great variety of activities with your many friends make this activities interesting and fun.
During the night is when you put into practice what you have learned during your day time as you invade the minds of bad people. Each one of them is a dungeon in the game these dungeons are call Palaces and they are unique every time. The size of the Palaces are 2 or 3 times bigger than the previews Persona´s and have secrets rooms and branches that you can explore.
While fighting in the dungeons you have the choice to capture some enemies. They are called Personas and once you capture them they can join you in battle, adding all kind of abilities. You can also merge them and create a more powerful version of Persona. This game uses a turn base system, just like previews Personas, it´s a complex, but also a friendly system which once you get used to it you will enjoy.
Once you advance you will unlock some places called mementos, in which you have side missions, and more important, you can grind for experience. The more you advance, the enemies in the new mementos will be more powerful and will net you more experience.
This game has a great graphic style and it is a pleasure to watch the different locations of Tokyo, like restaurants, stores, the dungeons, all of them full of vibrating colors. It´s available only on PS3 and PS4.
In overall, this game has great graphics, a very good story and so many extra activities that you can do during the day that you will feel that time passes very fast.
